Given the lockdown and social distancing rules here in New Zealand, it’s worthwhile brushing up on your virtual interview game. There are still companies that are currently moving forward with their recruitment, which is of course great news! It is definitely a possibility that you can get to the offer stage without even visiting your potential employers workspace. Virtual interviews and virtual tours of the workspace are becoming the norm.
- First things first! Test out the camera on your device. Nothing is worse than logging into an interview meeting with your potential employer and them not being able to see you or seeing that you’re having technical difficulties. Check it ahead of time, get a friend to log in with you to ensure your sound, camera and internet all work. Test the technology or application the interview is being conducted on. AND of course, make sure your device is fully charged and/or plugged in.
- Although you aren’t meeting your potential future employer face to face, the dress for success rule still applies! And, don’t just think to wear a dress shirt with beach shorts, be fully prepared. This approach will not only get you into the right mindset but will make you feel like it is an interview and not just an informal chat.
- Maintain body language and eye contact as if you were sitting opposite them in their office. There is nothing worse than people being distracted or looking around their room at the tv, at people walking by or just outright not paying attention. This interview is no different to a face to face one, you want to make the best impression in order to progress to the next stage.
- Ensure you enter the interview early, just as you wouldn’t turn up to an interview late, you’d more than likely be there 10 or so minutes early! Do the same here, show your enthusiasm and it gives you a couple of minutes to mentally prepare yourself.
- Of course have your questions prepared, do your research on the company and have specific questions. The interviews are as much for you as it is for them! Use the time wisely and thank them for their time at the end of the interview.
Video interviews are quickly becoming normal, getting some practice ahead of your first interview is a good idea. If you want to have a practice ahead of the time get in touch with the team and we would be happy to help!
